RIP Rex Reed, the only film critic to play a trans woman in a film co-starring Raquel Welch, Johns Huston and Carradine, and Mae West.

RIP Rex Reed, a member of the New York Film Critics Circle for over 50 (!) years. The first year I voted in NYFCC's awards, we picked something Rex hated and he loudly groaned and dramatically threw up his hands. That was Rex! A legend.

Rex Reed was a sharp writer who, later in life, became a walking cautionary tale through smooth-brained obsolescence. When you start dinging movies because you're too racist or misogynistic to give them a fair shake - as he did over 20 years ago - it's time to throw in the towel.

Anyway, the Medveds and Rex Reed, if you want names. Not exactly shocking but not sure why film writing is seen as a way to convey one's lack of taste. (A really ripe, really cold whole radish kimchi with hot rice... one fermented with a lot of fish or shrimp... 🤤)

Rex Reed's place in film and criticism history is... let's call it "complicated." People who think modern critics (or just entertainment journos period) are "too mean" should read the quotes in this piece 😂 He was who he was, and there won't be another.

After a screening of Terence Davies' The House of Mirth a critic turned to Rex Reed, tears in their eyes, and asked him "Oh my god didn't you just love it?" The eyes that returned this young man's stare were dry and narrowed "Honey. I don't love anything." Rex in peace to an utterly disagreeable man

RIP Rex Reed, whenever I think of him I think of his very important, at the time, blurb on Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Rest in peace to Rex Reed. Thanks to LOST IN AMERICA, I'll always remember he liked going to screenings at 10am, preferably by himself, and he hated being in the packed movie houses at night when they fill them with the secretaries from the film company and all the secretaries' second cousins.
