President Donald Trump proposed asking Congress to suspend the 18.4-cent-per-gallon federal gas tax to ease rising pump prices. The national average gasoline price has climbed more than one dollar per gallon since late February to a four-year high, driving the proposal. Congress must approve any pause, and analysts say an 18.4-cent cut would only shave a few dollars off a typical fill-up while reducing federal transportation revenue and offering no guarantee retailers or refiners will pass savings to drivers.
