Doomsday Clock, experts warn risks from war, AI and climate

scienceMay 9, 202618487

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists kept the Doomsday Clock at 90 seconds to midnight, its closest setting ever. The group cited the Iran war, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and accelerating climate breakdown as factors increasing the odds of nuclear conflict and societal collapse. The clock is set each year by the Bulletin's Science and Security Board and Board of Sponsors, which include leading scientists and Nobel laureates, to signal global catastrophic risk. Experts say those converging threats make urgent action on nuclear diplomacy, AI governance, and aggressive climate mitigation necessary to reduce existential risk.
