Actress sues James Cameron over alleged Avatar likeness use
Q’orianka Kilcher filed a lawsuit against director James Cameron and Disney, saying the Avatar character Neytiri used her facial features without permission. Kilcher, who made her acting debut at 14 as Pocahontas in Terrence Malick’s 2005 film The New World, says the suit was prompted after Cameron saw her in an advertisement for that film and wrote "this is actually her... her lower face." The complaint frames the claim as misappropriation of Kilcher’s unique biometric facial features and seeks monetary relief tied to Avatar’s billions in revenue. A ruling for Kilcher could reshape how studios use real actors’ biometric likenesses in character design and force new consent or licensing practices across Hollywood.
I was sort of laughing at the idea of someone watching Avatar with the big blue aliens and going, 'Wait a tick, that's me!,' but they actually cite a video where James Cameron identifies her by name and says "this is actually her . . . her lower face"
There's an interview with a production designer from 2009, in which the designer says Cameron specifically told him to use the plaintiff's likeness (but the designer also says he used others including Mary J. Blige...) gizmodo.com/avatar-conce...
🎶Can’t take my, can’t take my, no he can’t take my lower face🎶
I’m not a lawyer so I have no idea if this behavior gives Q’orianka Kilcher a case, but it’s another one for the James Cameron Behaves Like a Gross Blowhard file.
Terrible guy who sometimes makes good action movies. The second thing is no longer good enough to excuse the first thing, sorry.
yeah celebrity likeness rights do exist in the law (thanks to Vanna White). its pretty remarkable for him to say the quiet part loud.
Really solidifying my theory that the reason I find the avatar movies so annoying is because I find Cameron to be a deeply tiring man
