Tennessee GOP unveils map splitting Memphis majority-Black district

Tennessee Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a proposed congressional map that slices Memphis and breaks up the state’s lone majority-Black district. The plan carves cohesive majority-Black neighborhoods into multiple districts as a swift response to last week’s Supreme Court ruling that narrowed protections of the Voting Rights Act. The Republican-controlled General Assembly is poised to approve the map quickly, which would eliminate Tennessee’s only reliably Democratic congressional seat and dilute Black voting strength in federal elections.
