Sergey Brin weighs in on the wealth tax debate
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, published an essay arguing that billionaires should face a wealth tax. He makes the case the tax is necessary to address extreme concentrations of wealth and to reform the tax system. That stance matters because a high-profile billionaire endorsing a wealth tax shifts elite opinion and could influence policymakers and public debate over taxation.
By spending his fortune trying to stop California from taxing billionaires, Google co-founder Sergey Brin is illustrating why we need to tax billionaires. Some thoughts... https://robertreich.substack.com/p/sergey-brin-shows-why-we-must-have
"Do no evil" has morphed into "Don't help others" The rich used to build hospitals, libraries, schools and do other good works. Now, they won't give away the steam off their piss.
“So far, he’s spent $57 million trying to defeat the measure.” Wow. Anyone spending that much money so they won’t be taxed definitely makes the case for taxing the wealthy. Imagine how things would change if the wealthy paid the same taxes as the bottom 50% and the bottom 50% paid zero…
Sergey is worth about 290 billion. To be clear: that is 290.000 millions! He can buy a one million dollar supercar *every day* and it would take 800 years for him to run out of money
Sergey Brin is in the Epstein files, so maybe he just needs to go to prison for that?
He is probably going to spend more money fighting the billionaire tax than the billionaire tax will cost him. When did billionaires become such schmucks?
Every bravo real housewives episode is also illustrative of the need to tax the wealthy
I have had it with Russians.
An income tax on billionaires is not going to solve the problems. Loopholes are used by the super rich to avoid taxes & preserve enormous hoarded wealth. A major tax overhaul is the only way to rebalance the big wealth gap. Loopholes can be closed, estate tax increased & compliance reinforced.
Companies have always had two good choices: Give workers an equity stake or work with a union. Most do neither. Most choose to go medieval or monarchical. Think Marie Antoinette. Billionaires want to eat their cake and eat our cake too. And then tell us to eat cake.
Gee I already felt like We The People should tax BILLIONAIRE out if the dictionary. Bring back 1950s 91% tax!
Tax billionaires out of existence. No human being needs or deserves to be a billionaire.
We need to tax billionaires out of existence and nationalise their businesses.
These modern day billionaires, especially the tech bro variety, appear to be the most low-class, uninspiring, unrefined, corrupt, undeserving, self-absorbed dweebs in history. Just a bunch of garbage dump parasites negatively impacting society and humanity at large with endless selfish BS.
And the wealth taxes is not enough. Democrats need to reverse all the Trump tax for the rich cuts in regime one and regime two and the bush tax cuts for the rich.
I guess they have a right to advocate for holding their status, and we all have the right to eliminate it.
The fact that we now know the wealthy are baby raping satanists means we should do more than just tax them.
Wtf do you think you are saying? What part of “$50 Trillion has moved from the bottom 90% to the top 1% since 1975” (per Heather Cox Richardson) are you not understanding? Love you, Robert, but “it’s not a zero-sum game”? Bullshit.
These corrupt tech-bro jerks are who we need to be laser-focused on.
A one time wealth tax isn’t the answer! I like what #KatiePorter stated in the debates last night! A billionaire or millionaire should pay more taxes than a struggling middle class family. Personally, I feel the rich shouldn’t be able to hide money in the Camen Islands or in other countries banks
A 5% wealth tax on them is a pittance. Nobody “needs” over $200B to life a lush life
They are so out of touch they are making the argument without even realizing it. My take: heymistermix.com/p/actually-w...
Billionaires aren't human beings. They are something much worse
No-one can ever convince me that this people earn their great wealth solely through their own efforts. as such they should pay a fee for (ab)using the community or at least allocate shares in the business to their employers who do the actual work
Having money to pay people not to tax you is for sure a sign that you could be taxed more, and a damning sign that the people taking money aren't working for the people they represent.
Billionaire spending on elections has soared faster than billionaire wealth. If you believe they’re donating bc they want people w/ great integrity & excellent character to be elected, consider that most billionaire political spending in 2024 went to Trump. robertreich.substack.com/p/sergey-bri...
If they want to go back to the halcyon days of the 1950, when white men were in charge of everything, don't we need to reinstate the tax code of that time, with top brackets of 70, 80 or 90 percent?
Any billionaire who spends $ on getting any republican elected just so the billionaire can continue to accumulate even more $ they don’t need and will never ever spend, should be loaded into a SpaceX rocket and launched towards Mars 🤬
