Robert F. Kennedy Jr. starts push to help Americans quit antidepressants

scienceMay 5, 2026454,220

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. launched a campaign urging health systems and doctors to create programs that help Americans taper off and stop using antidepressants. He called for clinicians to emphasize psychotherapy, exercise, social connection, physical activity, diet and nutrition and to develop structured tapering protocols for patients. Mental health clinicians and patient advocates say antidepressants can be lifesaving, that abrupt or poorly managed tapering risks relapse and withdrawal, and that broad pushes to stop medication could stigmatize treatment. The effort matters because it could influence prescribing practices and patient care for people on long-term antidepressant therapy.

This is such incredible bullshit. I am alive, thriving, and writing books on health policy/politics thanks to antidepressants. Antidepressants aren't for everyone, but they can be literal lifesavers. Attacking their prescribing & use is stigmatizing and dangerous. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/s...

Non-antidepressant things that would lessen depression, though (list not exhaustive): Trump's removal from office, RFK Jr.'s removal from power, Democratic landslide in November, Court expansion, restoration of a functional Voting Rights Act, holding Trump Admin officials & ICE agents accountable

Joshua Foust 🪖🎮97

The fuck is this story frame doing, also

Seth Trueger72

depression is a health problem, not a personal weakness

Lara72

Anti depressants are why I’m still alive

Azriel/Celosia59

Yes let’s listen to the fucking man who did coke off a toilet about anti depressants

Ralf W49

That godforsaken NYT headline! A completely neutral "help Americans quit " as if that's what Americans ON antidepressants want? And as if Kennedy has any medical or psych-med training? Even a fairly weak "Kennedy starts a controversial push..." would provide some needed context.

Cliff Pervocracy41

the whole argument seems to be that SSRIs are bad because you get depressed when you go off them. he gives this little speech in there about how SSRIs are "harder to quit than heroin" ...yeah buddy that's because you don't have heroin deficiency disorder

Rachel Parker38

JFC it's like we put L. Ron Hubbard in charge of our nation's health services. Narcissists don't like being told they need to fix themselves. See also: RFK Jr's history of mental health issues. How many times was he told he needed meds? Plenty, I'm guessing.

Dweb31

HE’S NOT A DOCTOR! My God, he needs to go.

Antifa Orpheus "Tempest" Wren 🏳️‍⚧️28

I've got PTSD and my antidepressants also hit my ADHD and the nerve pain in my left wrist. I will be in line to have "just a talk" with many other people, I'm sure, before he can have my meds

Someone (deep, prolonged sigh) tell Jake Tapper27

Holy shit the framing. "Help quit"

Ash B25

I had suicidal ideation from when I was 13 into my twenties, when I finally got onto antidepressants. Didn’t fix everything but not having constant thoughts of wanting to die was a huge upgrade to my life.

keep your electric eye on me23

Lithium saved my life. I do not exaggerate. People like Kennedy use their positions of power to inflict their own psychological problems (and lack of both empathy and intellect) on everyone else, and think of this as strength while describing anyone people's problems as weakness.

𝑲𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒂𝑺𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏18

Every provider I’ve ever had already does this. He’s stupid.

Jakey, MD17

I love it when a swollen red angry man tells me how to prescribe - this is the key to better health outcomes, when a raisin yells at doctors about teenagers’ libidos

Michael Tyznik16

It is bizarre that they treat the fact that people have worse mental health after stopping use of the drug that was helping their mental health as evidence that the drug is bad. It's evidence that the drug was helpful to their mental health. What are we doing here?

Goldy16

If Kennedy really wants to help people quit antidepressants he should resign.

Basil May14

The "war on opioids" has been devastating for people with chronic pain and many have been prescribed SSRIs and only SSRIs. I fear disabled folks will have yet another reduced resource.

liberation psychiatrist11

Heaven forbid we ask why about a fifth of Americans are experiencing depression or anxiety in a given year

Destiny's Problem Child 🏳️‍🌈10

Cut Medicaid. Cut psychiatric medications. Cut Ryan White. Cut food assistance. Make life unbearable. Remove the treatments that help people cope. The people who can't survive that level of pressure disappear. The system carries less burden. The "weak" get eliminated. It's straight up eugenics.

Don Bones 9

My only regret about antidepressants is not taking them sooner.

Jennifer Lee 🪁9

I don’t remember asking for the government’s help with this.

Charlie Purcell8

Cold dead hands and all that. He really wants to kill us

Kent Lind8

Also the alternatives such as mental health counseling and therapy are being SLASHED by this administration.

mykinkisdemocracy.bsky.social8

It’s all eugenics all the way down. You need anti depressants to thrive=they need to clean you from the gene pool. Asthma-Same Cancer-Same Measles-Same It’s a eugenics program. Phase 1 is passive, trtmnt withheld/made difficult to obtain It will take more than passive measures to meet their goal

Jace7

If this dude fucks up my nerve pill prescription because he's scared of Depression as a concept, I'm gonna personally haunt his ass for eternity. (This seems pretty cute and dry that he's trying to kill people with mental disorders because of his eugenics bullshit)

Violet Says Abolish ICE7

What’s next?! A push to get Americans off levothyroxine?? Insulin??

deanna7

It'd be prescient timing for EVERYONE to acknowledge the ALIVE & THRIVING part is what they really do not fuckin want. All these policies that have more sick or dead bodies at the end are surely not fuckin accidental but THE POINT. They don't wanna invest so the plan is SURELY NEGLECT THEM TO DEATH.

Joanne Nelson6

“Help quit?” It’s a medication, not an addiction. Also, removing access to medication isn’t “helping” someone quit, it’s denying them medical care.

Erik6

From my cold, dead hands.

Brautigan6

If we ever come out on the other side of this, I hope the academy has learned at least one valuable lesson: you need to plainly, publicly and forcefully call out the cranks.

Horn Slack5

The dude whose wife died by suicide wants to end antidepressants? How telling.

Kurt Shriner5

Next, he's going to convince Trump to sign an E.O. to help Americans End their Dependency on Water.

Nettle Songmorning5

As a psych nurse, this makes me so frustrated. We don't need more suspicion of lifesaving mental health meds!

Bette V. Collins 🇺🇸📎🧷V for Victory4

Remember when Tom Cruise said Brooke Shields should take vitamins instead of antidepressants (he did later apologize) His religious organization is against the use of antidepressents geneticliteracyproject.org/2025/01/27/c...

TRuxMintinBox4

Actual headline should be “Kennedy wants to force people to stop taking potentially life saving medication”

Tom P.4

What could possibly go wrong?

Queen Bree of the Mount Things4

as a trans person, i'd like to take this opportunity to welcome ppl on antidepressants to the shitshow looks like you're next up

WHY IS IMU SEXY!?4

If RFK resigns, I guarantee you several people’s need for antidepressants will be greatly decreased

Marjie Tennyson3

This man is killing people!

starlight18.bsky.social3

I need his help like I need tuberculosis.

Enfinity Cast3

The stigma around mental health treatment is wild — we've created this narrative where struggling with brain chemistry is somehow a moral failing instead of, you know, just chemistry. The psychology of why we shame medical solutions for mental health but not physical health is fascinating.

Mother Bones3

"Help" Americans quit antidepressants? I know he means "force." Fuck that pestilent leather-headed germ-imbibing child-endangering moldy eldritch horror.

Erinn3

This dried up catcher's mitt can stay TF away from my meds

soundfile2

Good way to spike violent crime, kicking people off their psychiatric meds

@Sister_Scene2

thank you for speaking out!!

Natty K2

Also, people like RFK Jr frame antidepressants as a “feel good drug” and I can’t state how untrue that is. Antidepressants do not give me a buzz or make me feel euphoric. It just allows me to stay alive by lessening the all enveloping agony of MDD.

bmaz2

But Kennedy is a one trick pony, this is all he's got.

Liberty and Justice for All2

Where are mental health professionals? All should be putting out statements on it. But they also should be addressing the very big problem of antidepressants being over-prescribed, prescribed by unqualified (a GP for one), and not monitored properly. These meds cannot be taken away willy-nilly.

Aberrant Eremite2

HELP?! Did they dare fucking say HELP?!

paulac61.bsky.social2

The inmate is running the asylum. Antidepressants have not only saved lives, they increase the quality of life for those suffering from severe depression. The side effect profile has improved tremendously. This is part of their purity test. Depressed people are not worh saving in their eyes

Jay Turner2

Will it make life worse for a whole lot of people who don't fit the description of "cisgender, straight, white, neurotypical male"? Then put it on the agenda!

Bohag2

RFK wants to remove antidepressants because he believes suicidal people should kill themselves and remove themselves from the gene pool.

John McCarthy2

Invoking the 25th would do wonders for people's depression. Let's start there.

Lori Barnett2

If there is ever a time we need drugs to help our stress, anxiety, and depression, it’s now. My youngest son takes anti-depression meds and he said it makes a huge difference in his life. Why should we be listening to a former heroine addict who has a brain worm, and swims in shit infested creeks?

ArvuReBantra2

Without my antidepressants I literally can't get out of bed. Even with them, there's days that I struggle with the basic task of "taking a shower".

Philip Gourevitch
@pgourevitch.bsky.social

The one big thing this guy could do to relieve depression in America is to quit and disappear. This nonsense he’s pushing will, like all his other pet policies, greatly increase many people’s suffering and mortality. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/s...

Today RFK Jr. rolled out a multi-pronged effort to help Americans wean off SSRI antidepressants. Do they want to? Comments are open. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/s...

bonnjny.bsky.social36

One way to get people off of antidepressants is for Trump to be removed from office. Alcohol consumption would go down as well.

plumstock.bsky.social14

This, from the guy who said he snorted heroin off a toilet set and cut the penis off a roadside raccoon with his kids in the car to "study it." Yeah, he's a medical expert.

Richard E Frankel12

Guy who did cocaine off dirty toilet seats starts a push to help Americans quit antidepressants

Random Cville Townie9

As long as the Nazis are running the government I need my SSRIs. If Harris was president I could have weaned off of them. Get rid of the monsters and we’ll all feel healthier.

Susanorand7

SSRIs help so many. Mind your own business RFK Jr. And what therapy will you be offering people who can’t afford it????

Colonel ⭕️olong5

I’m sorry but that dude isn’t qualified to help anyone with anything beyond carcass removal or getting more E. coli in their diet. No I don’t want that.

Sarah Karlin-Smith5

I think you are asking the wrong question. Do they want to versus is it likely to be medically beneficiary to them to do so? do they have access time and money to try his alternatives?

forkaroundfindout.bsky.social5

Is he changing the way society works? If not then people probably need their meds.

Aranda Therapy4

For what clearly defined purpose is he encouraging weaning off of SSRI's? Unless this is accompanied by an increase in resources to access mental health care, preventative services, and a focus on improving the societal systems that cause depression and anxiety, then this is pure ignorance. ;(

brycemke.bsky.social4

I’m not interested in swimming in filth- eating roadkill - drinking raw milk or cutting up whales- I’ll stick with science

Ima Private Person4

His wife committed suicide but okay…

Pusheen The Millennial4

No I do not. Tried tapering 7 years ago and relapsed so badly I couldn’t get out of bed. He needs to leave his eugenics BS in the 19th century where it belongs.

barely-sane.bsky.social3

A nutcase with no medical training is trying to impose views he picked up on social media onto patients suffering depression. Trump's MAGA cabinet are all unqualified weirdos with vastly inflated opinions of their own genius. They convince themselves of their moronic ideas.

listentoshaft.bsky.social3

Kennedy is no mental health specialist. Let the doctors make medical decisions.

Doc Sarvis3

Is he sure he wants to do this, though? There’s a boatload of speculation that antidepressants keep peeps unhappy with their lot from, y’know, rebelling

The Raccoon Overlord2

Wtf do you mean "Do they want to?" Fuck off with that. Imagine thinking depressed people can't make their own decisions. People who take medication for depression want to feel better.

Don Kronenberger2

“Help Americans Quit” is a biased headline that incorrectly assumes RFK’s perverted priors.

Elfkin2

Shut up! Anti Ds saved my life! Fuck you.

dmcal1.bsky.social2

Let’s just leave medicine to the medical doctors who know what they are talking about. RFK fried his brain after 12 years on heroin.
