The Mandalorian and Grogu get Star Wars Day trailer and May date
Lucasfilm released a Star Wars Day trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu and set the film’s theatrical release for May 22. The movie is the first Star Wars theatrical release in seven years and carries a $165 million production budget, the lowest in franchise history. The trailer includes new footage of the Mandalorian and Grogu, including a shot of Grogu drinking from a cup, and the film’s modest budget plus a theatrical rollout signals a shift toward smaller-scale, cinema-focused Star Wars projects.
I could be wrong, mind you, but also I can't help but feel as if the combination of resolving the season 2 finale in a Boba Fett spin off show, going all in on lore from other spin off shows, then taking years to do season 3 killed a lot of the momentum The Mandalorian had with the general public
One problem is when the mandalorian dropped it was like, Star Wars is exhausting now, Marvel is exhausting, instead here's a small, compelling, self contained story. Then Disney Disneyed & made The Mandalorian exhausting. Watching TV and movies should feel fun and not like being assigned homework.
The show worked because it wasn't reliant on watching a dozen movies and other TV shows. Then they tied it into four different other series and now watching it comes with homework.
Part of the problem is that both film and TV now take so long to make it’s impossible to strike while the iron’s hot anymore. I blame season 3’s delay on covid, but this being three years after that is unforgivable.
Side note: making the Boba Fett spin-off basically "The Mandalorian Season 2.5" was also a huge own goal.
