newsMay 4, 202650637

On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guard troops opened fire during a protest at Kent State University, killing Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, William Schroeder, and Sandra Scheuer and wounding nine other students. Getty Images has released archival photos and recent oral-history remembrances have been shared on the 56th anniversary to document the scene and survivors' accounts. The killings intensified national debate over the Vietnam War and campus protests, and the May 4 memorial on campus continues to mark the site and prompt reflection about the use of force against demonstrators.
