UK 'invention agency' awards £50m to US tech and VC firms

The Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) pledged about £50 million of UK public research and development funding to 14 US technology companies and venture capital groups, the Guardian reports. Those awards represent more than one eighth of ARIA's roughly £400 million R&D budget over the past two years and include some firms that were incorporated only days before receiving grants. ARIA was created under Dominic Cummings to back high-risk, 'crazy' scientific projects and was initially exempted from freedom of information rules. Putting significant UK taxpayer money into US startups and VC projects with unclear returns for the UK raises questions about oversight and whether the funding will boost British innovation.
