Blue Sky Art Show, theme 'ShadowPlay'

Blue Sky Art ShowMay 2, 202651125,572

A Brocken Spectre, a long shadow crowned by a rainbow halo on a foggy rocky ridge, presented shadow as spectacle and self-portrait. Others treated structure as graphic, with a Brutalist concrete building in London casting sharp diagonal patterns. Intimate studies found shadow in a hibiscus stamen across petals.

A view of the Crooked River winding its way through sheer cliffs at the birthplace of modern rock climbing.

Storm clouds gather over Lough Foyle at sunset, filling the sky with layered dark greys and heavy texture. A thin band of vivid pink and red light glows along the horizon behind low, rolling hills, contrasting with the brooding sky above. The water in the foreground ripples in the wind, reflecting muted tones of grey and faint pink, while a lone wooden post and patches of shoreline grass sit partially submerged at the edge.

My long shadow is cast on the top of a rocky ridge culminating with my head in a rainbow halo reflected on the fog down in the valley. This is known as a Brocken Spectre. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brocken_spectre

You can see a large sand dune. The play of light and shadow causes the colour to vary from orange to darker shades.

A black-and-white photograph of an arched corridor, where a sequence of smooth white vaults rests on dark stone pillars. Strong sunlight enters from the right, casting bold, curved patches of light onto the tiled floor, creating a rhythmic pattern of shadow and brightness. The corridor leads toward a bright archway at the far end, where a small potted tree stands in soft light, framed like a quiet focal point. The scene emphasizes geometry, repetition, and the interplay of shadow and light, turning the space into a calm, almost sculptural composition.

This is a black-and-white photograph of a very narrow stone alleyway, enclosed tightly on both sides by rough, textured walls. The stones are uneven and aged, their surfaces catching faint highlights where the light touches them, while much of the passage is swallowed in deep shadow. The ground is paved with rectangular stone slabs, slightly reflective, guiding your eye straight down the corridor. The alley feels long and confined, like a tunnel, drawing you toward a brighter opening in the distance. Light is the defining feature here. A single wall-mounted lantern on the left emits a soft, dim glow, illuminating only a small patch of the wall and leaving everything beyond it to fade quickly into darkness. On the right, further ahead, a brighter light spills out from a doorway or archway, creating a stark contrast. This light is stronger, almost harsh, casting sharp edged shadows across the stone floor. Between these two light sources, shadows stretch and pool heavily. The middle of the alley is the darkest point, where the light from both ends fails to fully reach. This creates a layered effect: dim foreground, deep shadowed center, and a glowing background. Details emerge slowly from the darkness. A small signboard leaning against the left wall near the entrance, a potted plant on the right near the brighter opening, and a decorative iron bracket above. Each object is partially lit, as if revealed only in fragments. The interplay of light and shadow gives the scene a quiet, almost suspended feeling. The shadows are not soft; they are thick and velvety, swallowing detail, while the light feels selective and deliberate, picking out textures and edges. It creates a sense of stillness, solitude, and mystery, like a place where sound would be muted, and footsteps would echo softly against stone. Finally, our picture is finished with a stylistic white border frame.

A black and white photo at John Rylands Library Manchester. On the left are some stone steps that lead up to the library. There is a metal railing in the centre leading upwards. There is a decorative stone pillar next to the stairway. High up on the wall is a stone sculpture of two robed figures 'Theology and Art' by John Cassidy. There is another figure just out of sight (Science) Most of the stairway is in darkness with light from above falling onto the steps, column and part of the sculpture
