The Onion’s Infowars takeover plans stalled by new court fights

journalismMay 1, 2026301,893

The Onion's plan to convert Alex Jones' Infowars into parody sites has stalled after emergency court rulings and new legal challenges halted the transfer. Courts issued emergency orders blocking control of Infowars domains and assets while multiple lawsuits contest WHO can lawfully repurpose the network's content. The pause matters because a completed takeover would have removed a major disinformation outlet and set a legal precedent for how courts and publishers reuse seized or judgment-linked media properties.

some late-breaking news on @theonion.com’s quest to take over Infowars: A Texas appeals court just stayed the turnover of the site to the official who inked the agreement with an affiliate of The Onion. This puts the deal in bizarre legal limbo for now. More TK.

The idea that Alex Jones has somehow tied up America’s legal system for years now it’s just one indication of how utterly screwed we really are.

Bryan Sullivan471

Well, why not? We’re not a nation of laws or rules any more.

augvision the trash skeleton300

courts like this are so corrupt they’ll gladly fight against parents of murdered children being paid what they’re owed to help one of the most worthless humans who has ever existed

Michael Martin162

You can always find bizarre self-appointed law interpretations in Texas.

Adjunct Angel127

but... the appeal already happened... you can't just appeal indefinitely right? the appeals already happened so this shouldn't be allowed right? Tex. R. App. P. 24.3 lays out that the transfer of property must be paused while an appeal is being made but... wtf? did i miss something in this case?!

I'm voting for any candidate ready to purge the judiciary and jail these conservatives judges. We can't fix our laws and become a democratic country again until we remove these ghouls.

Texas is so fucking corrupt

maraleia66

This is so fucking wrong. I hate this country so goddamn much.

southpaw48

Do you have a link to the ruling?

Chairman Kefka41

People have to realize that the Republican Party doesn’t believe in the Constitution nor the rule of law We keep operating under rules that Republicans literally will never honor under any circumstances

Pensive Dog on a Rocky Beach40

Heaven forbid any actual consequences follow a massive court loss.

Mistress Matisse37

Uh oh he found some rightwinger to jam the deal

Liz Tufte Art & Design28

This order is only TX pausing until Fed Judge Lee Rosenthal rules on Alex Jones' last-minute appeals in state and fed courts, but it won't stop the turnover. It will just slow things down bc Rosenthal doesn’t put up with BS. www.thenationalherald.com/what-to-know... www.reddit.com/r/KnowledgeF...

So much for rule of law. Supposedly bankrupt grifters seemingly have special rights to trample on the rights of victims as long as the judges like their views. Quality basis for a system of governance.

Dave in Ohio23

is this the same texas court that elon owns?

Roly Poly14

Anyone still think courts and lawsuits are going to work at holding these people to account?

That Fake Lego Thing From The Island Of Misfit Toys14

It's important to remember Texas elects all judges, from JP to Supreme Court. Are any of the Justices who ruled on this up for election this year? And D judges usually outperform Ds running for legislative and executive offices.

Dan13

Can you post the docket number and jurisdiction of this decision?

Mr Blifil11

Who benefits from this stay?

Metal Gear Squalid9

I always assumed the likelihood for shenanigans was high given that it happened the first time around, the team at the onion should really stop getting their hopes up until they have it for sure

knightingael.bsky.social9

This has nothing to do with Texas to begin with, so they can fuck off and not break other state's laws

Call Me Garbage Again8

But I manifested and everything

Mike Isely7

Pissed off? You bet. Surprised? No. Rule of Law is a joke these days.

marls7

link the opinion. it’s not that hard and there’s no reason not to!

Amber6

Any idea how long this stay might hold things up?

Anthony Pittore6

I'll just assume that judge fucks little kids if he's working this hard to protect Alex Jones

Paul Tyreman 〓〓5

Every day I am more convinced that US courts just make up the law as they go along.

Trumps America: laws don't mean shit. Judicial system can do whatever TF they want

EveryZig3144

Apparently you can just do infinite appeals if conservatives like you

Feklar669 SLAVA UKRAINI!!! ANDOR!3

So nice for the courts to be running interference for fascists everywhere. Rule of law was a good idea while it lasted.

feemus.bsky.social3

Ben was getting bored with his life as a billionaire press lord. This will give him something to do.

WizWorldLIVE3

Which docket is this on? Isn't this a stay that has to be granted, since Rosenthal granted the injunction?

Eric Johnson2

That's a crock of shit.

Unilateral ceasefire now. No war of aggression2

Why did it stay the turnover?

I'm not Gritty, but I'm gritty2

there is no void turnover order, so the other motion should be denied without further consideration

Rick Barber2

All this talk of turnovers is making me hungry. Never had an onion turnover, but might be good with caramelized onions and goat cheese.
