World Press Freedom Index at 25-year low; US falls to 64th

Reporters Without Borders' 2026 World Press Freedom Index, covering 180 countries, found global press freedom at its weakest in 25 years and said established journalism is 'being asphyxiated.' The index recorded its lowest average score, with three in four countries rated 'problematic' or worse, and the United States slipping from 57th to 64th place. Georgia fell to 135th, down 21 places this year and 75 places since 2019-2021 amid post-2024 legislative repression. Those shifts signal shrinking space for independent reporting, higher risks to journalists, and weakened democratic accountability worldwide.
