World Press Freedom Index at 25-year low; US falls to 64th

journalismApr 30, 202633914

Reporters Without Borders' 2026 World Press Freedom Index finds global press freedom at its weakest in 25 years, assessing 180 countries and warning that established journalism is "being asphyxiated." The index reports the average score across the 180 countries is the lowest in its history and classifies three in four countries as problematic or worse. The United States fell to 64th place, its lowest ever ranking, while Georgia plunged to 135th after dropping 21 places and 75 places compared with 2019, 2021 amid new repressive laws. The decline matters because shrinking press freedom erodes public accountability, limits citizens' access to information, and strengthens authoritarian pressure worldwide.
