Jerome Powell will remain on Fed Board as governor after term ends
Jerome Powell will step down as Federal Reserve chair on May 15, 2026, but will remain on the Federal Reserve Board as a governor. His board term runs through January 2028, so he will continue voting on FOMC decisions and monetary policy beyond his chairmanship. Powell called former President Donald Trump's criticism "unprecedented" and said his decision preserves leadership continuity as the Fed navigates inflation and interest-rate policy.
