Administration fires entire National Science Board

scienceApr 28, 2026603,901

President Donald Trump's administration dismissed all 24 members of the National Science Board, the appointed body that helps oversee the National Science Foundation. Board members had been preparing a report warning the United States is ceding scientific ground to China, and the firings leave the NSF without its governing board. The National Science Foundation is the primary federal funder of basic scientific research in the United States, supporting university grants and long-term projects. Experts warn the firings could delay grant decisions, stall awards, and weaken U.S. research competitiveness.

More details on the firing of the National Science Board. The NSF now has no director, deputy director, or board. They have issued almost no new awards in 2026. The plan appears to be to completely destroyed the agency. The details are horrifying and have Russ Vought written all over them.

The National Science Foundation is the main source of funding for basic sciences in the US. For decades, they have supported a scientific R&D ecosystem in the US that has been an engine of economic growth and competitive advantage. Destroying the agency is no less than an act of sabotage.

I’ve lost count of the list of “you shouldn’t be able to do that” things that have utterly destroyed the scientific infrastructure. Not enough people realize how this is generational damage

I read yesterday the board was readying a report stating China was surpassing the USA in science. Our government is actively destroying our country’s future.

Where do they think *all of modern society* came from? NOT scientists?????

Trump & Co. are destroying science, knowledge, and our future.

Currently on an NSF grant that goes until August. Guess I’ll be TAing until I finish my dissertation…

While this absolutely has Vought's fingerprints on it, I do wish to remind everyone who listens that Trump has repeatedly tried to slash research funding, including in his first term. The man is against the development of science and technology.

heard last month that they had a new space but it didn’t have internet or tables & chairs so most folks were working from home at least until June, which seemed like an ominous bit of news in combination with everything else.

This is a traitorous assault on the United States by ignorant Evangelical Republicans who reject modern science.

This Administration is extremely anti science! Ignorance abounds in this administration.

That is the goal... destroy anything and everything that had come anywhere close to making America decent, much less great.
