Andrzej Poczobut, a Polish-Belarusian journalist and 2025 Sakharov Prize laureate, was released from a Belarusian penal colony today as part of a US-brokered five-for-five prisoner swap. Poczobut had been sentenced to eight years in 2021 after a trial criticized as politically motivated. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk personally received Poczobut in Poland, and the exchange returns a prominent government critic to his home country while signaling a possible thaw in relations between Minsk and Western governments and raising new questions about press freedom and diplomatic bargaining.
