Pope Leo XIV meets Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally
Pope Leo XIV met Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally at the Vatican on Monday and prayed with her in his formal office at the apostolic palace. Sarah Mullally is the first woman to lead the Anglican Communion, representing about 85 million Anglicans, and this was her first official visit to Rome as archbishop. During their encounter Pope Leo said, "The unity or division of the Church should not revolve around sexual matters," and urged the Church to prioritize justice and equality. The meeting opens a formal channel for Anglican‑Catholic dialogue at a sensitive moment after the pope removed Bishop Emanuel Shaleta and Cardinal Louis Sako amid a high‑profile financial and governance controversy.
Really interesting point from @joshmcelwee.org here. "The unity or division of the Church should not revolve around sexual matters," (Pope Leo said). "I believe there are much greater and more important issues such as justice, equality... that would all take priority before that particular issue."
In which sane folk discover common cause.
This is interesting as a message not only to Catholics in Africa (and the rest of the world), but to Anglicans *particularly* in Africa who are upset about the new ABC. I wonder if/when Archbishop Sarah and Pope Leo will meet. Neutral territory. Maybe Avignon. 😉😉😄
