Portugal held nationwide commemorations on April 25 to mark the 1974 Carnation Revolution that toppled the Estado Novo dictatorship of Marcelo Caetano and set the country on a path to democracy and decolonization. Ceremonies in Lisbon and cities across the country used carnations, performances of Zeca Afonso's 'Grândola, Vila Morena' and readings of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen poetry as central symbols of the uprising. Activists invoked the slogan '25 de Abril sempre' to demand concrete progress on equality and inclusion and to warn 'fascismo nunca mais', framing the anniversary as a renewed call to defend democracy rather than a closed chapter.
