Anzac Day commemorations and local service notices

It's ANZAC Day tomorrow so it's time for my annual musing that Gallipoli being such a gigantic catastrophe, and it being the memorialised day, has stopped Australia and NZ going full War Christmas like the Brits have.

impossible to imagine NSW Police deciding to take over an Anzac Day march with their high power rifle pageantry 30 or 40 years ago. Alongside those WWII diggers marching or in wheel chairs or jeeps in their Sunday suits. This is such shameful shit.

I'll likely be at the #ANZAC Day dawn service tomorrow morning. But in addition to the diggers, I'll be remembering the four Gurkha battalions and one Sikh battalion who were on that peninsula too, but somehow have been erased from the dominant narrative. Lest we forget.

Yes. In the olden days when I was a Looney Student. I moonlight as a Kitchen Hand at Caringbah RSL & worked often on ANZAC Day. I used to make that most Aussie dish - Flied Lice for the Diggers

My Grand-dad was wounded at Passchendaele. I'm named after him. I think ANZAC Day originated as a form of collective grieving. This changed in the early 80s, when the NZDF began using the day as a recruitment tool.

Beyond the aus / nz Anzac stories - I still remember the first time I watched the last ep of Blackadder goes forth and being utterly floored, even as a teenager. I have little people now and ANZAC Day, wars past and present are so hard to explain - why were so many people sent to just… die?!

It’s time to make anyone (except for medical emergencies, a fire etc) anyone who interrupts a Dawn Service or Morning Parade , gets charged with a federal crime “interrupting ANZAC Day” with a minimum penalty of 12 months jail with no parole. Mandatory sentencing.
