Appeals court allows Texas to require Ten Commandments in classrooms

cultureApr 21, 202636191

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court and ruled that Texas may enforce its 2025 law requiring public school classrooms to display donated posters of the Ten Commandments. The ruling came in lawsuits filed by several Texas families WHO had secured injunctions that prevented some school districts from posting the displays. The appeals court said the Ten Commandments carry both religious and secular historical significance, rejecting a categorical rule against classroom displays. The decision restores statewide enforceability of the 2025 statute and leaves the constitutional church-state question open for further federal review, including a possible U.S. Supreme Court appeal.
