World Food Programme cuts Gaza aid

newsOct 19, 202634116

The UN World Food Programme will reduce monthly assistance in Gaza from about 1.6 million people to 1.1 million from October, ending support for roughly 500,000 Palestinians because funding has fallen by more than half from 2025 levels. The cuts include smaller ration box deliveries, reduced cash stipends for market purchases, and fewer hot meals at community kitchens, WFP country director Shaun Hughes said. Two thirds of Gaza’s population now face crisis levels of food insecurity, and 200,000 people are at emergency IPC phase four, one step away from famine. The WFP says it needs more than 300 million pounds over the next six months to restore and maintain critical programmes in Palestine. A UNICEF survey cited by reports found one in eight children in Gaza are chronically malnourished or stunted. The agency and aid workers warn that this winter will deepen hunger and that large-scale humanitarian assistance will be required until reconstruction and economic recovery are launched.
