Trump waives new Russia sanctions, defends the decision

newsOct 19, 202671350

President Donald Trump signed an executive order waiving sweeping new Russia sanctions that Congress had just passed in legislation named for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, saying the move “is in the national interests of the United States” and calling it “a very good decision.” The bipartisan bill targeted Russia’s largest buyers of oil and gas and would have allowed tariffs on goods from those countries; suspending the sanctions provides Russia a financial lifeline and follows Trump’s recent deal with Vladimir Putin to release hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel onto global markets. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Trump wants 60 days to analyze the sanctions’ impact on the U.S. and global economy amid pressure on energy supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the waiver as “wrong,” calling it a “financial reward for Putin” that will encourage further attacks. Lawmakers across parties criticized the decision: Rep. Mike Lawler and Sen. Dan Sullivan said they do not support the waiver, Sen. Richard Blumenthal called it “craven, cowardly,” and Darline Graham, who filled her late brother’s Senate seat, publicly broke with the president. The United Kingdom signaled a different view from the U.S., and the waiver has prompted immediate political backlash that could produce additional congressional scrutiny or legislative responses in the coming weeks.
