Ukraine and Poland are exploring a joint bid to host the men’s FIFA World Cup in the 2040s, Kyiv’s sports minister Matvii Bidnyi told POLITICO. Bidnyi said the nearest open World Cup date is in the 2040s and pointed to Ukraine’s co-hosting of Euro 2012 with Poland as a precedent, arguing a joint bid could “invite investors’ attention.” Any bid would be conditional on a dramatic improvement in Ukraine’s security environment; the country faces reconstruction and recovery needs estimated at nearly $588 billion over the next decade, according to a joint assessment by the Ukrainian government, the World Bank Group, the European Commission and the United Nations. Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, and U.N. General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock told the assembly there was “no safe space left” in Ukraine, with civilian casualties in the first half of 2026 up 114 percent versus the same period in 2024. The Donbas Arena in Donetsk illustrates infrastructure challenges: the stadium hosted Euro 2012 matches but was damaged after separatists seized parts of the region in 2014 and FC Shakhtar Donetsk has not returned. Bidnyi said a formal push would need to come from the sports community or football federations and that planning must begin now if the countries aim for the 2040s slot.
