Hotel prices jump as Europe readies for Aug 12 total solar eclipse
Next time my wife complains about my neurodivergent need to hold onto objects to keep the memory I am going to bring this up. While she can't find solar eclipse glasses to buy, I have located mine from the 1999 eclipse, which I watched from the top of a roller coaster while working at a theme park.
Don't worry, upon advice I won't be using them
Just a heads up, you shouldn't use those tomorrow - the lenses degrade with time, and you could damage your eyes thinking you're protected when you're not.
That is actually adorable. Ha.
careful those look damaged, tiny holes or scratches can damage eyes
Booked a room at a nice inn in St.Ives well over a year in advance for 1999 (and they honoured the price, which many places didn’t). Yes, it was overcast for the main event - but it was sufficiently amazing to inspire a bit of minor eclipse chasing, so we’re now in Mallorca for our fourth totality!
I still have a pair of those.
You're probably okay to keep newer eclipse glasses, but you should *definitely* not use eclipse glasses from 1999.
Not making any assumption about Dan but this is like the most Dad thing ever. The triumph of emerging from a shed with an item kept for a quarter of a century because 'you never know' is one of life's great pleasures.
In just two days, parts of Europe will experience a total solar eclipse! ☀️🌑 But these are rare and give scientists little time to study the Sun's corona. Here's how @esa.int is mimicking and modelling the eclipse to learn more about our star 👀 www.esa.int/Enabling_Sup...
No negaré que me gustaría observar el eclipse con un telescopio de infrarrojos por si se ve la "Linea Petrova"
Os imagináis que durante la exploración de los datos e imágenes del eclipse, descubren que está inestable y va a explotar en un mes?
Ai nii 12. päivä on tosiaan auringonpimennys. Jaksaiskohan sitä viritellä jonkun camera obscura -hilpattimen, hmöö. Taitaa jäädä teoriatasolle 😅
because i'm a muppet I did kinda consider using a welding helmet as solar eclipse specs tomorrow, until this afternoon's local news had a story about a bloke who damaged his eyes doing just that in 1999 - so consider this my public safety broadcast of the day
Wait. My Dad gave us the glass from his welding goggles to use for the eclipse in 1999. And now I'm finding out that he was highly irresonsible!
The libraries in my area had lots of viewing packets with glasses when they came through the last two times, if you still need a pair!
Overheard in the beach "I'm fasting tomorrow because it's the solar eclipse and you take forward whatever you eat after an eclipse, ask Pete, he knows all about it" WTF??
So if I get utterly eyeball screamingly loaded for it, I get to stay like that till the next one? Huge if true, but does explain the 00s after Cornwall '99.
Shame it’s only an eclipse and not The Rapture.
Oh I consult Pete about all my life choices.
It's because of the tidal effect, Fairy. During an eclipse the sun and moon are in perfect alignment making for an extraordinarily strong Spring Tide and if your body is full of wet, sloshy, foods, the tide can pull you directly towards the eclipse by ooh, 5-15% more than usual...
Take it forward to where?
I have read that 3 times and still not sure what it means.
