PC Alan Greer, a Police Scotland officer who took his own life in May, was a violent rapist who carried out sexual attacks and attempted murders of women over at least 14 years, the BBC can reveal. Detectives have so far identified nine victims, five of whom were sex workers, and investigators say more victims are expected. Greer’s first known assault was in 2012 when he raped a woman in her Glasgow home after she had called police to report a crime; she reported the attack late last year, triggering a major anti-corruption inquiry. The anti-corruption unit secured her statement by April, traced the 2012 call and found an officer repeatedly checked her crime file, including while on annual leave. Greer, born in Australia in 1978 and who moved to the UK at age six, joined Strathclyde Police in 2009, later working in officer safety training from about 2016, and used hundreds of prostitutes during his police career. Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff, gold commander for the investigation, called the findings "truly shocking" and said Greer had abused his power; a source close to the inquiry said it "could be Police Scotland's Wayne Couzens moment."
