Aston Villa have completed the £38m signing of Brazil midfielder João Gomes from Wolves, the deal structured as an initial £34m plus £4m in add-ons. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Villa Park after leaving Wolves' training camp in Portugal to have a medical and finalise the move. Villa pushed for midfield reinforcements after Amadou Onana suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury with Belgium at the World Cup and after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m. Gomes made 41 appearances last season, was named Wolves' Player of the Year as they finished bottom of the Premier League, and played 130 times for the club since joining from Flamengo in 2023. Wolves technical director Matt Jackson praised Gomes as a model professional and predicted he will become an outstanding player. Gomes ranked third for tackles in the Premier League last season with 107 and had 194 ball recoveries, giving Unai Emery a combative, experienced option expected to adapt quickly to Villa's methods. The signing follows Villa's earlier club-record deal for Johan Manzambi and comes as the club manages midfield turnover while aiming to comply with Premier League and UEFA financial rules.
