White House defends Argentina over Falklands banner

The White House defended Argentina after players held a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" following their World Cup win over England, with Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA task force, saying the team had the opportunity and ability to "make those statements" in the United States and invoking the First Amendment. FIFA may open disciplinary action because its rules bar political statements by players. Downing Street said the Falkland Islands "definitely are" British and backed calls for FIFA to investigate, while the Falkland Islands government said it was "disappointed but not surprised" and hopes FIFA will "sanction all behaviour of this nature." Argentina vice-president Victoria Villarruel posted on X that the match "wasn't just another match" and declared "The Falklands are Argentine." The article notes Argentine players also sang chants referencing the Falklands and national greats after beating Egypt in the last 16. The piece recalls the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina over the islands and that a 2013 referendum saw 1,513 of 1,517 votes favor remaining a UK overseas territory.
