G1 Climax 36 night one: Callum Newman tops Yuya Uemura

At NJPW G1 Climax 36 Night 1 in the NOW Arena, Hoffman Estates, IL on 7/11/2026, Callum Newman defeated Yuya Uemura in an A Block match. Newman, who denied Uemura a New Japan Cup win earlier this year and later captured (then lost) the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, landed a running shotgun dropkick despite carrying a shoulder injury sustained at Dominion last month. A published card of night-one results rated the match ****1/4. The bout was repeatedly singled out in coverage of the show as one of the night's standout matches and figures into Newman's ongoing push in NJPW's G1 storyline.

One of the better efforts I've seen from Tsuji. He and Takeshita have good wrestling chemistry. Not sure if Callum is 100% yet, but he's a special talent. Yuto Ice is so fun. Shooter vs ZSJ might be my surprise second best of the night. Good fun all around.
