U.S. revokes authorization for Iranian oil sales after tanker attacks

newsJul 7, 202617401

The U.S. Treasury Department revoked a general license that had authorized Iranian oil sales after three tankers were struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz in recent days. The move followed fresh U.S. airstrikes on targets in southern Iran; U.S. Central Command said the "powerful strikes" were meant to "impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway." Bloomberg reported the revoked license was the core economic concession behind a previously signed memorandum of understanding, and the Treasury action further imperils that agreement. A U.S. official linked the license revocation directly to Iran's actions against commercial shipping, and news outlets reported oil prices rose after the announcements. Iranian foreign ministry statements published by Tasnim condemned the Treasury move as a violation of the memorandum of understanding. The revocation removes a formal U.S. authorization for global sales of Iranian oil and could prompt further diplomatic and market reactions in coming days.
