Tall Ships parade sails into New York Harbor for America's 250th

On the morning of July 4, during America’s 250th birthday, a Parade of Sail moved up the Hudson River past Manhattan, highlighted by Chile’s tall ship Esmeralda and dozens of other vessels. The Esmeralda is a steel-hulled, four-masted barquentine operated by the Chilean Navy, 371 feet long, used for sail training and nicknamed La Dama Blanca. Spectators on Little Island watched ships, tugboats and battleships pass while military jet flyovers left red, white and blue smoke trails. Organizers said the international armada included more than 40 tall ships, with one report listing 43 ships from 22 countries, sailing from the Verrazzano Bridge past the Statue of Liberty toward the George Washington Bridge. The historic sloop Clearwater was removed from the parade after displaying banners calling for Indigenous rights, racial justice and climate action; the Coast Guard escorted that vessel out with assistance from the US Navy and NYPD. Parade planners and participants said the fleet will visit other ports after New York, including a scheduled stop in Boston.

Today’s Parade of Sail on the Hudson River was stunning. I’m so proud to be the Mayor of New York City — our nation’s first capital — and to be celebrating America’s 250th anniversary on its historic shores.

The Coast Guard just removed the Clearwater from the tall ship parade in NYC for having "Save the Clean Water Act" and "Indigenous Rights, Racial Justice, Climate Solutions” banners. They were escorted out by the Coast Guard, US Navy, and NYPD. www.instagram.com/p/DaYOP8OlIq...

It's a banner on one side of the Clearwater's main sail that reads "Save the Clean Water Act" and has a drawing of Pete Seeger's banjo on it.
