Speaking from George Washington’s desk in New York City Hall on the nation’s 250th birthday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged that the United States offer asylum to persecuted migrants rather than punish people seeking refuge. Mamdani framed immigration as a core issue alongside economic inequality, denouncing monopolies, oligarchs, and a politics of exclusion and calling true patriotism "righteous dissent" that fights to make the country live up to its promise. His address linked those themes to concrete progressive priorities such as healthcare, housing, and better wages as remedies for systemic injustice. The speech prompted sharp public responses: former Florida governor Ron DeSantis attacked Mamdani’s stance on immigration, and Palantir CEO Alex Karp criticized Mamdani’s experience and views. A separate mayoral recommendation about thermostat settings also drew conservative outrage during the holiday. Robert Reich circulated Mamdani’s line, "America should offer asylum for the persecuted, not persecute those seeking asylum," highlighting the speech’s central asylum appeal.

Zohran Mamdani: "We see the wealthiest country in the history of the world — one where children go to sleep hungry while the world’s first trillionaire hungers for more. We see monopolies that dominate every industry and oligarchs who buy elections.
