UK agency uncovers international network of drug‑facilitated rape

The UK National Crime Agency says it has uncovered a "truly international network" of organised drug-facilitated sexual assault in which offenders sedate victims, rape or sexually abuse them, and film the attacks. Investigators began probing an online forum in October and have linked more than 270 individuals to that forum and its successors. The NCA has sent more than 210 intelligence packages about suspects and potential victims to law enforcement partners, with over 90% of those sent abroad; domestic intelligence has opened at least 14 investigations and led to eight victim-survivors being safeguarded. NCA deputy director Nigel Leary said users traded graphic advice on which drugs or sedatives to use, how to administer them, how to film assaults, and tactics to avoid detection, and that offending often exploited committed, trusting and long-term relationships, citing the Gisèle Pelicot case in France. Europol separately said an operation with seven countries identified 156 victims and perpetrators in what it called an unprecedented targeting of drug-facilitated sexual assaults. The NCA warned other groups remain unidentified and that such crimes are almost certainly under-detected and under-reported, and investigators are sharing intelligence internationally to prompt further probes and safeguarding actions.
