Dame Penelope Keith dies aged 86

Dame Penelope Keith, the British actress best known for playing Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life and Audrey fforbes‑Hamilton in To the Manor Born, has died at the age of 86, her family confirmed on Monday, June 29, 2026. Her death followed a cancer diagnosis, the family announcement said. Keith’s long career included television roles such as Caroline Fielding in Executive Stress and stage work, and she served as president of the Actors' Benevolent Fund from 1990 to 2022. She had children, according to published biographical material. West End theatres will dim their lights for two minutes this week in her memory.

Awww funny the famous deaths that "get" you. For Gen X and older Penelope Keith was really part of the fabric of things though. And maybe she represents a fading part of Middle England that clung on to at least the idea of decency and generosity as part of its identity? Just incredible actor also.

It's one of those things that makes me wish I'd gone to the theatre more when that generation were in their prime. The ones who learned subtlety of gesture from doing TV but still grafted on stage could be so great. I saw Richard Briers do King Lear once, it was MIND BLOWING.

Maybe her stage background reflects the Golden Age of BBC, when budget forced both comedy and historical drama to produce themselves like West End plays, before the Beeb discovered CGI effects and tried to be “American” shows?

She always came across as a really genuine and nice person, and far less stuck up and snobby than the characters she usually played! No scandals, no nasty words for anyone, nothing untoward – as you say, one of the last bastions of what we think Middle England *should* be.

My pet theory is streaming has broken people's understanding of what a sitcom is. It's a situation, a setup, that creates comedy, which resets after each episode. But coz people binge, they think it's a narrative arc, and thus, most classic sitcoms are telling the story of mental illness or abuse.

Very sad to hear of Penelope Keith’s death today. I met her just once in the early 90s when I taught her how to drive a Channel Tunnel locomotive on a TV documentary. Yep really. I remember her kindness, warmth and friendliness. Bless her. So talented.

As a schoolboy I went to Watford Palace Theatre to see Noël Coward’s Fallen Angels with Fenella Fielding and Penelope Keith. The latter was a huge star because most of the nation watched her as the formidable Margot Leadbetter in The Good Life. Never were an actor and role so perfectly matched. RIP

Mrs Tim and I watched all episodes of The Good Life earlier this year. I don't care who knows it either, because it remains one of the all time great ensemble comedies, acutely written, and acted by stars who were at the absolute top of their respective games but admirably generous to each other.
