Robert Eggers released the first trailer for Werwulf, his grim werewolf film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp. The story unfolds in 1300s England and Eggers told Empire the film leans into grime and sensory detail, saying he wants audiences to "smell the shit." Focus Features rolled out the trailer with the tagline "Do not dread the darkness. Embrace it." Visual notes in the trailer point to shooting on 35mm film with a black and white grain structure layered onto color film. One viewer post says the dialogue was written in 14th century Middle English with help from two Oxford professors. Werwulf opens in theaters on December 25; Eggers has discussed the trailer and what to expect in an accompanying Empire feature.
