FIFA allows rainbow flags at Egypt v Iran Pride Match in Seattle

sportsJun 26, 2026376,420

FIFA confirmed fans may bring rainbow flags and LGBT symbols to the Egypt v Iran World Cup match in Seattle, saying “The FIFA World Cup 2026 is an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds. Fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome at matches and events.” The decision comes after Egypt and Iran reportedly asked FIFA to ban Pride flags around the game; both federations pushed back and there were reports they threatened to walk off if subjected to Pride-related activity. Seattle’s local World Cup committee designated the fixture an unofficial “Pride Match” and is running celebrations that FIFA says are organized locally, not part of the tournament. Ahead of kickoff, Iran and Egypt largely avoided discussing the Pride events at pressers while Iranian-Americans and other protesters demonstrated outside venues in Seattle. Organizers and local supporters encouraged visible Pride displays in and around the stadium during the match, leaving stadium policy unchanged and the match to proceed with rainbow flags allowed.

BREAKING🚨🏳️‍🌈 FIFA just REFUSED demands from Iran and Egypt to keep rainbow flags out of their World Cup match in Seattle. And the reason this matters is brutally simple: two governments that criminalize LGBTQ people tried to drag that censorship into a global sporting event, and FIFA said no.

Hate to say it, but I told you they can't stop us from waving Pride flags in Seattle during the match. Seattle is Seattle and that's that.

FIFA said it’s the Gay of Hormuz now, bitch.

the phrasing of "fans of all sexual orientations" is taking me out

No credit to FIFA, none whatsoever. But it honestly kind of surprises me they’re allowing it. Maybe their hatred of Egypt or Iran is stronger than their hatred of queer people? Is that what’s going on here?

In the year of our good lord how is trump the president, why are people still getting their silken lace knickers in a bunch over someone else's lifestyle when it is not directly detrimental to them?

Oh I'm shocked. Dare I say it, I can't believe FIFA did a decent thing?!?! Uh happy pride!?!? I'd say Seattle be gay af, but I don't think y'all need to be asked to do so 🤭 #happypride #worldcup

My bet is that there’s going to be more pride/rainbow flags at this game then at any other game in history.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 is an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds. Fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome at matches and events.” Unlike, of course, the FIFA 2022 World Cup, where such things were banned…

JUST IN: 🇪🇬🇮🇷 Egypt and Iran file objection with FIFA to prevent LGTBQ flags at its World Cup match due to Islamic religious values. Seattle refused and officially designated the Egypt-Iran game a "Pride Match."
