The rise of the far right is a far more direct threat to Europe’s future than any Russian menace. If this trend continues, there will be no political support left for the spending needed to deter Russia. This problem requires introspection, harder than endless declarations about external threats.

Whilst I’m pro-European and someone who sees Britain’s future in Europe, this is racist nonsense. Stop pitting immigrants against each other. And frankly, this is a ghoulish thing to say when parts of the European right (esp. the far-right) want to kick non-white people out of Europe.

Main Brexit win as far as I'm concerned is that none of the far-right populist parties in Europe that were calling for Frexit, Dexit, Grexit, Nexit etc are any longer doing so. It's such an obvious catastrophe that it's scared off even the charlatans...

A bit sad to compare politicians that would be seen as "run of the mill left wing" in Europe to maga, which is just pure far right white supremacy. What a shame. And it's described as an axiom. Mamdani or maga, same thing, no need to even explain what we mean, it's implied, apparently.

Another form of British exceptionalism is a failure to see that so much of what we are experiencing is also happening elsewhere. Yesterday, Germany's entire railway network ground to a halt following an IT failure. Across Europe, the far-right is on the march.
