UK Met Office issues rare red heat warning for southern England and Wales
The UK Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for extreme heat across parts of southern England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday, warning temperatures could reach 40°C or higher. The warning covers areas from Kent and Sussex west through Somerset and north to Birmingham and runs from 1:00am Wednesday until 11:00pm Thursday, with forecasters flagging unusually high humidity that raises health risks. Vets and health officials are urging people to protect pets and vulnerable relatives, while councils and event organisers are cancelling outdoor gatherings and advising against non-essential travel into affected areas. Workers' groups are calling for maximum workplace temperature rules as authorities warn the heat could cause power and transport disruption.
Rare red warning. Risk to life. Stay out of the sun. Avoid unnecessary exposure. Picture editor: "Counterpoint: Run the fun-on-the-beach shots?" We won't improve heat coverage until we stop illustrating public health emergencies with beach photos. www.independent.co.uk/weather/heat...
Just wait for the predictable stories about A&E being rammed with people collapsed with heatstroke and kids having drowned after "cooling off" by jumping in a reservoir or other entirely unsafe body of water. We don't learn.
The thing is, if you live where I do, it makes perfect sense to run for the coast in very hot weather. It’s normally a good 5-7 degrees Celsius cooler there. But you don’t then sit on the beach in the full sun in your swimsuit. You find a nice shady place with a sea breeze.
The news comes on: "people are being advised that heat stroke is a possibility." The editors, turning up the surf rock: "hell yeah!"
More like it? Schools close as more than half of France under red heat alerts www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Quick photo of the back room curtains fully closed to stop out heat from midsummer sun. Almost any image would be more helpful than the crowded beach photo they chose to use.
Future skin cancers. No hats in sight.

Let's keep burning those fossil fuels. Before you know it, we'll be up to 50C.
Grab a bottle of water, Switch on an electric fan, Sit in front of it, And stare at this.
This isn't normal. While this government is in chaos, its failure to protect people from extreme heat will cost lives. We need maximum workplace temperatures to protect workers and cool spaces so the vulnerable aren't exposed.
I saw someone with a sticker on their car saying 'Climate change? You mean summer!' and i just...i nearly keyed them. And it's only going to get worse too :/
Wet bulb temperatures need to be explained by the MSM and given greater priority than air temperatures.
we need media sovereignty petition.parliament.uk/petitions/76...
Vulnerable people in the UK, have been discarded by the government.
Also worth asking Green Party councillors to call EGMs for their local councils to debate their councils’ responses to the red alert for extreme heat, & plans for retrofitting towns & cities for what we were warned about for decades.
Unsure what a quick solution is for older hospitals with no air con and such things as windows that open an inch (so patients can't jump out) and lack of fans (infection control) I'm dreading my shifts this week and the poor patients
Unfortunately it's becoming the new normal. And the absolute silence by our media on the cause is something as alarming as the results.
We also need maximum classroom temperatures to protect students.
I’ve said this for a long time. Worked in a school classroom at 40 degrees, me and the children nearly passing out. We should have sun days like snow days.
Dangerous and potentially historic extreme heat is forecast to impact parts of western Europe this week. We already know that these temperatures are made at least 5x more likely due to human-caused climate change. Stay safe! Explore the attribution data at csi.climatecentral.org/climate-shif...
One small part of Portugal and entire Spain and France are under extreme temperatures. But for some, there is no climate emergency... here, this is a woke thing.
Yep, we're cooking, boiling alive. So are pets, cattle, wildlife, and plants. It is a true nightmare, which will last until thursday night. All records have been broken. France has never been that hot, ever, not only in june, but july and august too. And yet, some retards still pretend it is normal
This all soon begins to have a major effect on food production, and that is the late moment when people finally wake up from their consumerist dream. Alas, it might be too late by then.
Not looking forward to summer in the southern hemisphere...
Explain this index please , what is a 4?
Historic until next year i suspect
Important mass lobby update: With a red weather warning in place for the day, it will not go ahead. We are reaching out to participants with further detail and actions, but please do not travel. We are arranging a future date and will update ❤️ www.transsolidarityalliance.com/post/weather...
We know this is disappointing, and we are aware of the timing around the end of parliamentary scrutiny of the EHRC code, but there is no way to safely run it with latest forecasts. There are lots of other actions you can take, watch this space. www.transsolidarityalliance.com/post/weather...
Thank you for doing this will still a few days' notice. It can't have been an easy decision.
I have been looking at train companies for their refund policies in this weather. This is LNER: www.lner.co.uk/travel-infor... - you can travel earlier on tue/wed/thu or get a full refund.
What the fuck‼️ I have booked time off work. (losing money). Booked my rail tickets from Scotland. Booked a hotel. Hundreds of pounds down the drain 😡
I'll boost any meet-ups people now unable to cancel tickets/rooms can attend. We should probably set up a donation fund for anyone out of pocket.
I came on here looking for an update bc I was expecting this when I saw the update - thank you for looking out for everyone's safety in this! It's a shame bc I actually managed to get time off, but hey. I prefer not dying
I'm sad about this but not surprised. I'll see if I can get my train tickets refunded (I doubt it), and if not, does anybody fancy a day out in London?! Any safe places to have a drink in solidarity (preferably one with air con and/or a beer garden!)
40C in London on Wednesday and a Red Heat Alert As far as I know, nothing from the mayor or the government about mitigation - establishment of cool refuges, closing of schools etc The approach seems to be to pretend it's just normal hot weather It really isn't
That's 104°F for us backward Americans. In a country where the notion of AC is pretty much an alien one.
Deaths among rough sleepers peak during excess heat, more so than during winter
It's being downplayed and has been for years. Harder to whitewash #ClimateCrisis when people start collapsing in the streets.
They can bank on the week after, once the rain comes back and it's in the teens again, everyone forgets about their near death experiences days before and start wishing for 'global warming' again.
Action is vital now. Partliament can start that by setting a much stronger carbon budget this Wednesday - on the very day that new record breaking temperatures are expected. #CarbonReckoning are ready for legal action. Read more!👉 bsky.app/profile/dran...
No doubt they'll continue in their fantasy of 'normal weather' until absolutely forced to concede to actual reality. I wouldn't like to attempt to predict what criteria might bring about such a change. But inevitably it will come.
