L.A. declares local emergency as Boyle Heights cold‑storage fire continues

Los Angeles declared a local emergency after a cold-storage warehouse fire in Boyle Heights burned into its fourth day, sending thick, caustic smoke across the city. Firefighters continued to battle repeated flare-ups while ventilating and stabilizing the facility, and officials opened emergency shelters for residents affected by smoke exposure. Authorities briefly issued a shelter-in-place for nearby neighborhoods that was later lifted as crews improved conditions inside the building. The plume degraded air quality across Los Angeles, including Glendale, Alhambra and West Pasadena, and officials urged people to stay indoors, use N95 masks and run HEPA filters because the smoke poses health risks.
