President Trump moved federal special education oversight from the Education Department to the Department of Health and Human Services and named HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to run those programs. Disability advocacy groups say Kennedy’s history of denigrating autistic and ADHD children and his past proposals to slash disability services make him unfit and risk treating students as medical cases rather than learners. The Republican chairman of the Senate education committee pledged a committee vote to try to prevent the transfer and shield special education from HHS control. The change matters because shifting control and funding decisions to a health agency could alter eligibility, services, and civil rights protections for millions of students with disabilities.
