European Commission eyes law change to allow water‑intensive critical‑minerals mines

The European Commission is preparing a draft plan to loosen EU water protections and fast-track water-intensive critical minerals mines in drought-stressed regions. The draft would rewrite a key law that protects rivers, groundwater and wetlands to remove regulatory bottlenecks and accelerate projects for battery metals and rare earths. Six planned strategic mines are slated for highly water-stressed areas in Spain, with additional projects in Portugal and Greece, countries ranked among the EU's worst for water scarcity. Campaigners warn "It's Russian roulette" because increased mining could drain aquifers, damage ecosystems and undercut the green transition even as the EU seeks supply security for batteries and renewables.
