D‑Day anniversary, Allied forces landed on Normandy beaches in 1944

newsJun 6, 2026657,829

On the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, ceremonies in Normandy honored the Allied troops WHO stormed Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches during the June 6, 1944 invasion, codenamed Operation Overlord. About 156,000 Allied troops landed that day with massive naval and air support, and about 4,400 Allied soldiers were killed during the assault. The landings opened the Western Front that led to the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe, making D-Day a decisive turning point and a central focus of remembrance.

Character consists of many elements. Physical courage, of course, is high among them, and on this anniversary of D-Day, we rightly remember, first and foremost, that of the soldiers who stormed the beaches and scaled the cliffs of Normandy and who risked and gave their lives for us.

But we also mustn't forget the moral courage of a leader who, as shown by his remarkable draft message below, was willing to face and accept responsibility for his decisions and actions, however they may have turned out.

Rick of this Shit35

Who knew just a few decades later, we would desecrate that sacrifice and let America fall to simple greed. No bombs, no wars, just pure unadulterated greed was all it took to destroy this democracy.

savinghistory4us.bsky.social31

Today, June 6, 1944, the Allies invaded Normandy in Operation Overlord, laying the foundations for the liberation of France from Nazi occupation and the end of Hitler's reign of terror. Let us hope that its significance is not lost upon contemporary Americans, suffering under the current regime!

To eliminate fascism from the world...

My dad was on day three, Omaha Beach, advance forward, Old Hickory. I find it unbelievable that this many years later, we now have to fight Nazis again, in our OWN country!!! Heartbreaking knowing what he and his unit and all WWII veterans went through to end up here.

Franken-Pattern14

We need to abolish the "gop" who spit in the faces of these brave soldiers who gave all to keep us safe and to destroy facism. What was once the party of Lincoln and Eisenhower is now a cheap criminal enterprise of human traffickers, larcenists and manipulators. #endthegop as it is OUR RIGHT!!

Don Comer14

A relation was at D-Day & remembered the bits of paper blowing around the beach in the wind like confetti. Every soldier had letters from home tucked into his pockets, pack, helmet, boots, ... & that papery snow was from those letters.

nancyspantsbelt.bsky.social14

I was taught by history teacher who was missing digits from that.💐 He would be shocked we fell into tyranny \ non representative government via new monarch billionaire perverts!👹👹👹

ShannyDee💙12

My pops was one of those kids who saved the world from Nazis. I never in my wildest grief thought there would be a moment that I was glad he isn’t here to see, but this moment in our country is indeed that moment.

Just keep swimming.12

May we never forget why they sacrificed themselves on foreign shores, far from home and their loved ones. Americans and allies, both.

Elliot Edelstein9

We have a leader that has none of those qualities in fact he's the polar opposite....our country is in tears 😢

falalala50.bsky.social9

My friend’s daddy, my “Italian papa” landed on the beach on D-Day when he was 18, was so severely wounded at the Battle of the Bulge that he was told he’d never walk again…he danced with me at our wedding 33 years later. This was “the Greatest Generation”…we owe them everything!

US Asunder7

Yes, and those people who made the ultimate sacrifice... were both Democrats and Republicans of all colors and faiths.

And according to the scumbag in the White House the ones who died to save the world were all losers and suckers.

My dad, farm boy and air force accountant, said little but he did call trump 'a character' before he passed. That's about the worst thing he would call a person. It doesnt seem like much, but it means the top of the sh*t list.

terrible towelie5

my grandpa was there if he were alive i'm sure he'd be even more pissed off than me over the nazi takeover of our country George, you get in there and tell the republicans about the rabbits, George

AprilSkies5

My dad’s first cousin, Jack. I recall childhood visits to my Great Aunt and Uncle’s home. They spoke proudly of Jack while we sat in their living room drinking too sweet tea with his photograph, in uniform, staring at us all. As a child I couldn’t understand how a sacrifice produced smiles.

@GioLovesYou5

My Dad went to Normandy Beach serving in Intel. He could barely talk about what he witnessed. (Both my parents were way older than me as the last child.)

Patricia4

FWIW, in regard to your Congressional run, I imagine that you & I would disagree on many policies, vehemently, but you understand exactly who the fascists are & what they’re doing. My major concern would be whether or not you support the conservatives on SCOTUS. They are destroying our democracy.

MH4

Thank you. May we strive to be more worthy of all they did for us.

Jocyle84

Today is the 82nd anniversary of D-Day. When 160,000 young men began the downfall of fascism. Almost 5,000 died. Statistically, some of them were probably great grandfathers of today's MAGAS. If that's you, you s/b so ashamed to support this fascist regime. Trump called them suckers.

OCB16404

For many Americans, D-Day was their first taste of combat. For us Brits, we’d been at it for 5 years by this point. No disrespect to any Allied troop of course. At the 60th anniversary, I partied with loads of the old boys-including a lock-in at a local pub! Crackin bunch of lads.unforgettable

We should remember, and never ignore this was not done to support a convicted felon to destroy!

My mind has it being 2 Americas now. One I love and remember, while the other is a living nightmare.

Let's be clear. Are you to be considered an Independent, a Moderate, a Blue Dog Democrat? Who are you George. Be clear. If elected, who would you caucus with?

Dre🍁🍉3

The patriotism I feel for the boys from Canada that gave it all at Juno beach cannot be overstated. We owe everything to you, as does most of Europe. I’m not a religious guy but bless your brave souls. Vive le Canada.🇨🇦

I was a huge fan of yours until I saw your weak and cowardly answer about genocide in the debates. I thought you had a stronger moral compass than that.

To me even more impactful than the battlefields in Normandy was the American cemetery

On this, we should all be able to agree! My dad was part of the naval fleet that landed men & matériels on the beach that day & also provided artillery cover. They were getting incoming from the Germans. An uncle lost an arm at St Lo. We owe these men & women a debt of gratitude. #VoteBlue

82 years ago, 14,000 Canadians landed on Juno Beach, many of whom would never come home.   On the anniversary of D-Day, we pause to honour those who served and sacrificed.

And the war against Facism never ends.

Jason Hanson30

I was on Juno Beach last June to try and track my grandfather's time with his Light Anti-Aircraft battalion there. I wept constantly, imagining how he would feel to see the current resurgence of fascism, the US threat of annexation; his friends dying so we could be apathetic. Never again.

Their courage gave future generations the freedom to dream, build, and live in peace. We will never forget their sacrifice. 🇨🇦

May their memory be a blessing.

June Astford17

German forces feared Canadian troops in WWII because they were highly aggressive, relentless in close combat & had a fearsome reputation. Veterans of the WWI warned the new generation of German soldiers that Canadians rarely backed down & were masters of fierce, aggressive squad-level tactics.

Fascism has returned. Courage. Not appeasement. Let’s keep the spirit of Neville Chamberlain where it belongs: in the dustbin of history.

An extraordinary & unforgettable moment when Canadians, Americans and the British stood shoulder to shoulder to fight fascism and liberate France and Western Europe. And here we are today, still struggling against it.
