Meta is erecting temporary tented data centers across the U.S. to house AI servers, with each structure taking about three months to build. The sites run on portable off-grid power plants and jet engines and contain racks of AI accelerators and hardware worth millions of dollars. By deploying tented facilities Meta can add compute capacity rapidly for large-scale model training, but the approach increases energy use and logistical complexity compared with traditional data centers.
