UK Health Secretary James Murray says he 'changed what he'd say' on 'trans women are women'
UK Health Secretary James Murray said he has changed how he publicly says "trans women are women," telling reporters he will avoid that exact phrasing. Campaigners accused Murray of performing a U-turn and being "weak" for stepping back from his previous wording. Murray framed the wording shift as part of a vow to protect single-sex spaces in the NHS, prisons, refuges and rape crisis services. The change matters because a recent case of a transgender woman reporting repeated sexual assaults in an all-male prison has sharpened policy debate over how language, access and safety intersect.
this is what happens when you put trans women in to men's prisons. trans women are not cross-dressing men. we use medical science to change our physiology. denying that is akin to flat earthery or creationism. trans women are women. we are not men.
Weird how the answer to male violence against other male people is to put some of the male people into prisons with female people rather than tackling the male violence itself and re-designing male prisons so they are safe for all men no matter how they identify or their vulnerabilities.
Men’s violence towards other men - and there are various vulnerable groups - is not women’s problem to solve. Prison services have a duty to keep vulnerable inmates safe. That is not achieved by abandoning women only prisons.
In case anyone thinks the new health secretary is any less transphobic than the last… I won’t post the link to the site as I refuse to give them clicks.
"i changed my mind" ok? reality doesn't care about your feelings. god cishets are such entitled dipshits
Straight swap with the exact same character.
Yeah ‘I changed my mind when it was politically expedient because I am a moral vacuum’. Fancy transmitting this character failing so publicly.
I think there should be consequences when a minister blatantly states something that is not actually the law in this country
It won't be called a U turn, this time, I guess?
And I reckon he looks like a shite Stan Laurel. I wish him all the lego bricks on which to step.
Honestly do these Labour Ministers actually believe in ANYTHING? Seems the Green Party are the only one’s left who will stand up for The LGBTQ+ community.
She cites prisons as an example of one of these “single-sex spaces” and it’s always been one of the most revealing things about “GCs” that they only object to trans women being put in women’s prisons, and have no objection to putting women in prison per se.
I remember seeing pics of them protesting outside a prison once. these "radical" feminists with their "radical" demand that women should of course be sent to prison, but god forbid that a trans woman is there with her and not experiencing the even greater hell of being in a men's prison.
And just as much silence when you point out how much violence actually comes from the guards
I have never seen a GC campaign against male guards in female prisons. I have raised the issue with them countless times and they do not care.
The thing is, there is no way to square not treating trans women as women with believing in their dignity, and I think it's telling here that he just focuses on "not using that language" rather than the far more obviously cruel, but implicit: "trans women are not women."
The absolute gall of claiming he believes in "dignity for trans people" later on in the statement.
It’s just so cowardly. I want to be ‘respectful’ to these people and let them live in ‘dignity’ but I don’t recognise their identity and don’t want them to really exist in public spaces. Handwaving the elimination of a group from society in the name of Labour values. Awful.
"not women, not not women, but a secret third thing (not women but quietly)"
