Kaja Kallas says Europe 'will never be a neutral mediator' on Ukraine
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Europe cannot act as a neutral mediator between Kyiv and Moscow, declaring "We can’t be mediators... we can’t be neutral, treating them equally, because we have been clearly on Ukraine’s side." She said Europe must defend European and Ukrainian security interests rather than treat Kyiv and Moscow equally in negotiations. Kallas added that European security interest includes ensuring Russian troops are not stationed in Georgia and Moldova and that any military limits demanded of Ukraine should be mirrored for Russia in a future peace agreement. Her stance signals the EU will remain a partisan actor in future talks, limiting its role as broker and increasing pressure on other powers to take on mediation duties.
🇪🇺🇺🇦 Kaja Kallas: We can’t be mediators, really, because we are defending the interests of Europe and the interests of Ukraine, because Ukraine is also in Europe. We can’t be mediators. We can’t be neutral, treating them equally, because we have been clearly on Ukraine’s side.
Too many countries continue to do business with Moscow while simultaneously enjoying privileged access to European markets and investments. So Europe must use its leverage more effectively when it comes to trade, investment, market access, and partnerships.
Europe should Threaten China with a trade embargo if they don’t stop Putin. Xi controls Putin, and China is helping him. But Xi absolutely depends on the European market, 400 million people and wealthy.
