Sen. Andy Kim pepper-sprayed by ICE during Delaney Hall visit

newsMay 28, 20267413,182

On May 26, 2026, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pepper-sprayed Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) and demonstrators outside Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark while he was supporting hunger-striking detainees. The detainees were protesting spoiled food, lack of medical care, and extreme heat, and Kim moved between agents and protesters to try to de-escalate before being sprayed. Kim said Secretary Mullin told him he should not have been at Delaney Hall, but Kim said his visit was meant to amplify detainees' and families' concerns. The incident raises questions about ICE's use of chemical irritants against an elected official and spotlights conditions inside the detention center.

NOW: I’m outside the Delaney Hall ICE prison in Newark, NJ where protesters are supporting detainees inside who are on a hunger and labor strike because of inhumane treatment. Follow this thread for updates.

I just spoke with Sister Sharon of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Philly. She drove straight from the ICE prison there where she was doing a weekly prayer session to Delaney Hall to support the hunger strikers. This is what she had to say:

Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin55

Thank you SO MUCH for being onsite.

GrumpHope22

Thank you for being there and showing how journalism supposed to look like. Be safe. Small token of gratitude:

Jessica Ellis21

Thinking many good thoughts hoping for your safety, thank you for this vital reporting!

Nor Dougherty17

Thanks, Marisa, for being there. Nuns truly do God’s work without a whole lot of acknowledgement (not that they’re looking for that). 💕💕🙏

Laura10

Yay, Jerry! Thanks for reporting, Marisa!

Corey Rayburn Yung10

I'm glad you're there, but stay safe!

Dr. O.7

There are armed, unidentified people threatening NJ citizens. Where are the state police?

Greg Todd6

Atlanta’s police chief said his department will not work with federal immigration officials to arrest or detain undocumented immigrants during the upcoming World Cup. And Chief Darin Schierbaum also said Tuesday that nobody will be arrested “just for being homeless”

Quiltybon6

Glad to see some more congressional reps there.

Cascadian Prepper.3

Stay safe ma'am we need you.

Stephie3

I appreciate you coming here to NJ! Crazy times... I am scared we will become the next MN.

CMHoskins2

Thanks for being on the ground reporting! Stay safe!

Noelle Schultz2

God bless you and stay safe🙏

Lucha2

I hope you stay safe. Thank you for going out there!

ICE is shooting pepper spray and attacking press right now at Delaney Hall.

@replamonica.bsky.social

I was at Delaney Hall yesterday. Everything the detainees wrote in their S.O.S. letter is 100% correct. DHS is lying to keep their abuses from being exposed. And to make things worse, they pepper sprayed @kim.senate.gov and are lying about it to cover their tracks.

🚨 ICE MOVES IN WITH BATONS 🚨 Outside Delaney Hall on Day 6 of the hunger strike, ICE agents push protesters off the public sidewalk and toward the street. WATCH @jordanchariton.bsky.social LIVE ⬇️

Hope those ice fucks know they’re greatly outnumbered and if these protestors were the “violent radical lunatics” that our government pretends they are, those ice guys would be destroyed pretty swiftly.

Whitesheepranch9

Why isn't this front page news across the country? #ICE

wileynann.bsky.social5

Mikie Sherrill needs to send in the National Guard to protect the protestors who are allowed to be on public sidewalks!

rangersfan80.bsky.social4

They want the protesters to get violent that's why they're doing it.

kg1968.bsky.social4

Remember there is a payroll paper trail of ICE agents. And many videos of abuse. May take time, but accountability under a democratic administration will be inevitable.

grantsodiosa.bsky.social3

If they have jobs to do they could just do them. Instead they choose to attack peaceful protestors having some expectation that they can terrorize people at will with impunity. We may still have laws against domestic terrorism. Why are we not enforcing those laws??

Jinx2

ICE isn't abusing people over their immigration status - they are testing how to control CITIZENS. Preparation in plain sight. The Insurrectionists will be fighting to keep us OUT of the Capitol. America's "brand" is eroding under Trump. He's making crime more appealing than abiding by the law.

old yvette2

This is a horror show. My God, how is this America? And why aren’t those who have integrity, intelligence and power (not to mention big money) putting a stop to this? There’s gotta’ be some of those left - right?

CalleyCat2

ICE, getting ready for midterm election.

okay7.bsky.social2

We aren’t safe and we aren’t free any more.

ColoradoThomas2

@hochul needs to activate the NY NG to protect them. WTF is she waiting for? Someone to be murdered like in Minnesota?

tootall64.bsky.social2

Start "wacking" these Nazi fucks. What a weak ass people you are

Changing the subject from losing the war

Senator Andy Kim
@kim.senate.gov

Secretary Mullin said I shouldn't have been at Delaney Hall, but I disagree.   This isn't about me. This is about the detainees and their families, the lawlessness we're seeing from ICE.   I was willing to take a risk and I'd do it all over again to keep people safe.

Mullin says it's Sen. Andy Kim's fault that ICE thugs pepper-sprayed him outside a detention facility. Kim "shouldn't have been there," Mullin says. The Trump regime thinks it owns the streets and all of us are inmates in their version of America.

Nothin’ but Blue Skies from now on18

A sitting US Senator “shouldn’t have been there”? In the state he represents? Fuck you, Marquayne! F….U…..!

@kathmandu513.gobirds.online13

So glad the Dem senators that voted for their "friend" were clear eyed about how Mullin would run DHS.

renajane.bsky.social9

ICE shouldn't have been there pepper spraying citizens. Andy Kim had every right to be there.

Martin Pollard9

Typical abuser mentality. "You made me punch you repeatedly in the face!" Toxic masculinity run amok.

m. hela fella8

Its a public street. Andy Kim has every right to be there.

Susan Hendrick, Esq.7

It’s literally part of the job of our Congress to do oversight. Time to defund Mark Wayne Mullin and the Gestapo.

T...AM.R. 🇺🇲7

Federal judges will love Mullin's attack on 1A and the law that allows lawmakers to enter detention centers without notice.

sg1954.bsky.social5

Update: DHS Secretary Mullin defended Delaney Hall today. Detainees were served food with worms. His response: ‘This isn’t a Holiday Inn.’ GEO Group maxed out to Trump. This is what $1 billion buys.

I am SO sick of it all 🥺4

Mullin is a WHORE for this vile Administration. HOW DARE HE SAY THAT! 😡

ILuvPolitix3

When I asked AI to tell me the difference between ICE and Nazis, it told me Nazis didn't wear masks.

Jennie Lane3

But Ashli Babbitt was a victim.

DrunkEnough2

That sounds like “she deserved it.”

csbricker.bsky.social2

We have the right to peacefully protest. Mullin needs to read the constitution

Lisa Farrar2

They have a lot to learn.

Michael P. Scott2

Fuck these people! They can go straight to Hell!

baldnakedcosmo.bsky.social2

Mullin has no idea what the laws and protocols are. What a surprise, a trump appointee is a totally incompetent “yes man “.

dachjo.bsky.social2

What did we expect? Mullin is an asshole through and through. Power exposes that.

sweetniss.bsky.social2

He's an elected representative. He has every right to be there.

Raelle
@jazchaz.bsky.social

All eyes please on Delaney Hall in Newark today/tonight while ICE shifts detainees mid‑hunger‑strike fight. They starve to protest cruel neglect inside; Protesters being pepper‑sprayed, reps pushed aside. Due process is bleeding & this assault must end before lives are lost because ICE won’t bend.

Excellent poem Raelle but I wish it was a happy one. Sadly, ICE continues to cause mayhem wherever they go. These detention centers are modern day concentration camps where people die due to conditions in them. Families have been separated. We need change Always grateful to be included

I AM SO ANGRY!!! This is not the America I know and love. The treatment at Delaney PRISON is beyond inhumane. It is reminiscent of Nazi camps like Auschwitz and Buchenwald but without the ovens. #StopICE #StopDeportations #StopTheMadness 🤬😡🤬😱
