Pope Leo XIV issued his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, on May 25, 2026 from the Vatican, calling for global "disarmament" of artificial intelligence and demanding strict international safeguards. In the 42,000-word document he condemns lethal AI weapons, declares just war theory outdated, and asks forgiveness for the church's delayed response to technological threats. The encyclical insists that so-called artificial intelligences do not possess inner experience and affirms "Human dignity does not depend on a person's abilities, wealth or position in life" as the guiding principle for AI policy. Leo also targets concentrated technological power, warns AI could widen inequality and displace workers, and notes a 2025 MIT estimate that AI could replace 11.7 percent of the U.S. workforce to argue for public ownership and regulation.
