Australia 'death tax' row over proposed trust changes

politicsMay 18, 202619406

The Coalition has labelled federal budget proposals to change discretionary testamentary trusts 'a death tax by stealth', with Coalition figure Taylor saying the new trust rules sneak in a tax on inheritances. Treasurer Jim Chalmers dismissed that characterisation as 'a scare campaign, pure and simple', rejecting the claim the government is secretly introducing an estate tax. The dispute matters because the adjustments would alter how testamentary trusts are treated at death and have become central to arguments over Labor's budget and broken tax promises.
