Deadly Israeli strikes erode fragile cease-fire in Lebanon

newsMay 9, 20261217

The New York Times reports Israeli air and drone strikes across Lebanon have killed roughly 2,700 Lebanese and about 20 Israelis, including 18 soldiers, as attacks continued in southern Lebanon and near Beirut. The strikes have forced about 20 percent of Lebanon's population from their homes and damaged civilian infrastructure, worsening an already acute humanitarian crisis. Those developments have eroded a fragile cease-fire with Hezbollah and raised the risk of renewed, wider fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border, threatening broader regional escalation.
