Deadly Israeli strikes erode fragile cease-fire in Lebanon

Hostile fire during a "ceasefire" that never involved cessation of firing has accumulated to the point it is "eroding" the ceasefire, but not to the point the label "ceasefire" is no longer accurate. But it's is more than unceased fire "testing" the ceasefire, or showing it is "shaky" or "uneasy."

Don't worry. This is not a problem. Trump and Hegseth assured us that the cease fire remains in place. Mike Johnson notified Congress that we are still not at war, so stop counting the days already. Yes, we are shooting, and they are shooting, but all is well. We are at peace with Iran.

I always thought a cease-fire was a simple concept: either fire is ceased, or it's not. But no, the NYT understands it as a protean, polyvalent idea, with manifold meanings requiring years of continental philosophy seminars to fully understand. It can be eroded, or tested, but never just "broken."
