A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near the Rat Islands in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska on May 9 at 04:42 UTC with an epicenter near 50.97N, 179.15E. The USGS logged the main shock at about 50 kilometers depth and seismic networks recorded a nearby magnitude 4.4 event at roughly 8 kilometers depth. Authorities issued regional alerts, and because the quake occurred in a remote part of the Aleutian arc at intermediate depth, officials do not expect widespread damage or a major tsunami for Alaska's populated areas.
