Golden Tempo wins Kentucky Derby, Cherie DeVaux first female trainer

sportsMay 2, 2026793,601

Golden Tempo won the 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with Jose Ortiz aboard, beating Renegade (Irad Ortiz Jr.) and Ocelli (Joe Ramos) WHO finished second and third. Trainer Cherie DeVaux, a 44-year-old former pre-med student turned horse trainer, became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner. DeVaux saddled her first Kentucky Derby starter, turning a one-time opportunity into a historic breakthrough for female trainers in American thoroughbred racing.

My dad, who's been serious about horse racing for as long as I've known him, calls me yesterday and goes, "You gonna watch the Derby?" I say, "Probably not." He goes, "Well anyway, a horse named Golden Tempo is going to come from way behind to win it. Write it down. Golden Tempo." Me: "Ok, sure."

He's not answering his phone, but I am eager to hear just exactly how much he bet on this horse.

23-1. I hope your dad laid down a bit of a wager! Also, can we get his call on the Preakness a day in advance?

The jockeys for Golden Tempo and Renegade are so enthusiastically celebrating there at the end because they are brothers. I don't know anything about horse racing but that's amazing.

If you didn’t place a bet off of this your father should ground you.

First woman trainer to win the derby!

I am literally following you in hopes of getting a tip about the Preakness from your old man

Tom Bigler6

Can I get your dad's superfecta picks next year?

That finish was nail biting. Golden Tempo was drafting all those horses and just Shot the Gap. IT was AWESOME man. 😊

I hope he placed a big bet.

I have a few other questions for your dad.

Wyunker3

What's your father's phone number...I need it before Preakness.

Wow. I hope he bet.

I love horses, but the way these are treated, when they no longer win is evil.

Shire is working on his first album2

So use your dad for race betting in the future then?

theklittle2

So you bet the farm and you’re retiring now right??

Diaspora20222

Welp, I sure hope Dad laid wood on that!! 23-1 is a wonderful line!!!
